Get Ready to SHAKE OUT!!!!!

Get Ready to ShakeOut!The 2012 Great Utah ShakeOut is just two weeks away, and more than 820,000 Utahns are registered to participate in drills across the state, a phenomenal number for out first ShakeOut! If you have recently registered, welcome!

With two weeks left, many more people and organizations can still register to participate and become more prepared, especially if you invite them! They do not need to go anywhere to participate– wherever they are at 10:15am on 4/17 is where they should practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

This email is the next ShakeOut Update sent to people who have registered. You can also follow us on Twitter @UtahShakeOut or at Facebook.com/UtahShakeOut.

Have You Seen These Resources?
The following are just a few of the many ShakeOut resources available to help you get ready for your ShakeOut drill.

  • 60-second ShakeOut Drill Broadcast audio and video recordings are available in English and Spanish.  Download the recordings (or view on Youtube) to play over your PA system or on individual computers.
  • Simple instructions for how to participate are available for a variety of ShakeOut participant categories, and include  preparedness information.
  • To help organizations plan their drill, we have created drill manuals for K-12 Schools, Businesses, Non-Profits and Other Organizations, and for Government Agencies and Facilities. These can be adapted for use by other organizations as well. Each manual has instructions for multiple levels of drills, from a very basicDrop, Cover, and Hold On drill to a more comprehensive exercise of your disaster plan.
  • The Utah ShakeOut earthquake scenarios webpage has information about twenty potential earthquakes and the losses that each would cause.
  • Lots of additional preparedness information is always located atBeReadyUtah.gov.

ShakeOut in the News

The weekly columns on earthquake preparedness in the Deseret news continue, and will soon shift from what you can do before an earthquake to what you will need to do afterwards. Here are a few more of the tips that have been published so far:

  • Food Storage – The only time it will be too late to start building food storage is during a disaster. People may quickly clean out stores of supplies you will need, so start buying a little extra food each time you go to the store so you’ll have plenty in an emergency.
  • Sanitation – We talk a lot about food and water storage, but we sometimes forget to plan for the other end. Where would you go to the bathroom if the sewer system is disrupted? This column will help you prepare a backup toilet.

Additional news stories are listed and will be added to the ShakeOut News section of the Utah ShakeOut website.

If your drill on April 17 will be open to the general public or of interest to the news media, please consider submitting your event to be listed on our list of ShakeOut Calendar of Events and (if appropriate) our list of ShakeOut Media Venues.
