Basin woman seeking Lego donations for cancer patients

Submitted Photo
Legos for Leukemia recipient Carter Hadlock, who is diagnosed with Leukemia in Washington. Hadlock has family in Vernal and was the first to receive the toys from the new Utah chapter.

What do cancer and Legos have in common?

Children in need of something fun and creative.

Jamie Toftum of Vernal has organized the state’s first ever Legos for Leukemia drive and plans to drop off the boxes of the toys to Primary Children’s Medical Center on Monday. She is accepting donations of any size of Legos through Saturday.

There are three drop off locations in Vernal: Paint Your Heart Out, 1303 W. 600 South Suite A; Tenacious, 27 W. Main Suite 1 (people who donate will receive 30 percent off of a purchase); Country Grub, 2419 S. 1500 East.

People can also drop off donations to the Uintah Basin Standard office, 268 U.S. 40 in Roosevelt, by Monday at 8 a.m. Toftum will pick them up on her way out of town.

Toftum, who is undergoing treatments for cancer, said she found out about the organization Legos for Leukemia last year and decided she wanted to organize a drive. The organization collects brand new Lego sets and gives them to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

“It just gives them a creative way to deal with this crappy thing that we call chemo,” she said.

Toftum, who taught art part time at Davis Elementary School before she was diagnosed, said she is organizing this effort “in honor of all these kids fighting this because I’m an adult and it sucks.”

The effort is also personal for Tenacious owner Abby Winkler whose daughter has Leukemia when she was small.

“I know how much time my little girl spent in the hospital, and for them to have anything to do is definitely special for them,” Winkler said.

Owner of Paint Your Heart Out Windy Barton said she was happy to help the effort.

“Cancer affects everybody,” Barton said. “If everybody donated a little time, the world would be a better place.”

As of Friday morning Toftum had collected 63 boxes of Legos.

“My goal was 50 boxes and we’re well over it,” Toftum said. “We have an amazing community here, our community is so helpful.”

She said her children will likely be carrying Legos on their laps in the car on the drive to Salt Lake City Monday.
