Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind – Public Input requested

A Task Force has been organized to study Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind. They are asking for public input at a meeting on:

May 26th from 3:00-6:00pm

DSBVI (Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired)

250 North 1950 West, Suite B
Salt Lake City, UT  

Please consider the following questions and plan to attend to have your voice heard.

1.       Is the role of USDB to provide direct services to students with sensory impairments or to provide support for others who in turn provide direct services?

a.       Which of these services is most important to students in Utah?

b.      What should the relationship be between USDB and school districts and charter schools?

c.       Are students’ best served in USDB classrooms or district and charter classrooms with USDB support?

2.       USDB is a “quasi-governmental agency” with ultimate responsibility and accountability to the Utah State Board of Education.

a.       Who should ultimately be responsible for USDB students?

b.      Who is responsible for USDB concerns and is there a better process for resolving USBD concerns?

c.       Where should the “buck stop” for USDB?

3.      Is the current administrative structure of USDB meeting the needs of USDB students and employees?

a.      Is there a more efficient administrative structure?

b.      Is there a more effective administrative structure?

c.       What do you believe is the best administrative structure for USDB?

The 2011 Redistricting Committee has scheduled 17 public hearings throughout the state – more than ever before. (That’s in addition to the regular meetings at the Capitol and the Special Session when we’re done.) Please plan to attend, listen, learn, and participate.

Autism Family Fun Day at Westminster College

Family Fun Day 2011

Date: Saturday, May 21nd

Time: 2-4 pm

Place: Westminster College—Commons [1840 S 1300 E, SLC] (in case of inclement

weather, the event will be held in the hallway of Malouf)

Cost: FREE!!!!!

Event: We are hosting a family fun day for children with autism and their families—yes,

siblings too! We are hosting our 4th annual family fun day for children with autism and their families—yes, siblings too! Students taking a class about autism will provide around 20 various activity stations including a sensory station, finger painting, bubbles, and more. Due to overwhelming interest on campus, there are two sections of the course running this year! Special guest activity includes adults with autism who will provide face painting. Healthy refreshments will be provided!

Free St. George Mini Conference

To all, We are a group of professionals who are putting together a free mini conference in St. George for families of children with disabilities. Please see the attached flyer about the classes. We’re really hoping to get as much attendance as possible to this mini-conference.. but we need your help…we would appreciate it if you could contact families and let them know about it and encourage them to go…the information presented will be valuable!   (This conference is given through a grant from Utah State University)

Stakeholders Meeting May 11th.

Congratulations to all of you who worked so hard during the Session.   We think that because the DSPD Board is no longer in place it is a good way to give and receive input from the Department. We are all interested in how cuts and new money will be handled.   Please attend the meeting scheduled for May 11th. at 3:00 p.m. in room 1020C at Human Services. The meeting is open to anyone who would like to come.   Hope to see you on the 11th.
